Although many people in countries with temperate climates rarely witness the effects of these illnesses, if you are looking for adventure far away from home, it is very important to prepare for the dangers that tropical climates can bring.

Before visiting ecolodges or sustainable hotels in tropically-inclined destinations, I highly recommend consulting a qualified medical professional about vaccinations and other preventative measures you should take while traveling.

Additionally, some countries even require international travelers to obtain a yellow fever vaccination before they are cleared to enter their sovereign borders.

Peel, Cook, Or Boil Fruits and Vegetables

 Enjoying the local cuisine is a key part of the sustainable travel experience for many people, including me, and I don’t want to stop you from supporting local farmers.- Just know that it can come with some risks. Stomach and intestinal illnesses are unfortunately not uncommon. From personal experience in Costa Rica ( I was in bed for seven days), I know an infection is often pretty severe.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to reduce this risk. Firstly, embracing the principle of “cooking it, boiling it, peeling it, or forgetting it” for fruits and vegetables is a great starting point for maintaining health and safety on your trip.

Don’t be shy to try the delicious local fruits and vegetables. Make sure you stick with the principle above, and you should be fine. I recommend treating potentially hazardous foods such as salads from buffets, ice cubes, or ice cream with care.

Mosquito Prevention

Mosquito prevention is vital; you can take various actions to avoid being bitten. In addition to applying insect repellent and keeping your windows and doors closed, wearing bright long-sleeve clothing will give you adequate protection compared to wearing dark colors. This is because mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, and these may act as a beacon for them.

Also, it’s important to remember that after the sun sets, temperatures drop quickly in many areas, especially in parts of Africa. Taking a sweater with you wherever you go while exploring those regions is highly recommended.

Local Insects

When you travel to a secluded area, those who have experienced it themselves can guarantee that at least one tiny insect or spider will find their way into your eco hotel room. However, don’t become too alarmed if this happens; it is unavoidable and happened to me multiple times as well.

Mostly, these insects are harmless, and the hospitality team in your green hotel will be more than happy to help remove them if you do not feel comfortable doing so yourself.

Different Standards in Hotel Ratings

With the number of choices for lodging when traveling abroad, it can be hard to know which green hotel is the best fit for your personal situation.

Researching reviews and ratings can help, but much might get lost in translation due to differing standards from country to country. For each ecolodge recommendation, I will also advise whom this kind of accommodation is best for, like Families, Couples, Honeymooners, etc.
